Six zones, two exceptions

Four zones cover the contiguous states and two more cover Alaska and Hawaii. Arizona and Hawaii do not observe daylight saving, and a dozen states are split between two zones along county lines that follow commerce rather than longitude. Scheduling across the country

Three hours separate the coasts, five or six once Alaska and Hawaii are included. The reliable national window is early afternoon Eastern, which is late morning Pacific — narrow enough that getting the zones right matters more than most people assume.
